Hahaha, it’s funny because Jff’s harridan of a mother ripped away his self-esteem when he was a boy, and now in middle age he feels he must sheepishly ask his wife for permission to go on a vacation similar to one he took with Min-dull and Mopey Pete three years ago…a vacation which, naturally, is centered around COMIC BOOKS! PRECIOUS COMIC BOOKS! THEY’RE AS GOOD AS GOLD!
Look at the difference in working in the kitchen. In the old days you might be lucky to have one window A/C for the entire house. The lady is wearing heavy plastic frame glasses. etc
Why is Jeff asking his wife? He should, by this time, be adult enough to make his own decision by this time. Certainly, as anyone gets older, they should develop their own mind (or not!). His mother looks, in the 2nd panel, to be the one “ruling the roost” and Jeff couldn’t make a move without mommy’s say-so. Poor kid!

Rexall, the US’s first national drug store chain. Didn’t most small towns have a franchised store?

Yep, I spent many hours in the local drug store reading the new comics.
They didn’t ever say anything to anyone who put them Back after “Browsing” the comic.

If I had the opportunity to go to comic-con I wouldn’t be asking for permission. I’d be telling them I’m going!
