A friend kept getting computer scam calls on his landline. He’d have me take the call if I was there, my default open: “are you asking about the Sun Server or the Apple Workstation?”. Amazing how many still tried to scam – one finally figured it out and – claiming it wasn’t a scam – threatened to give out the number to other scammers!

I think a better way to prove you’re not stupid would be to hang up on the guy and block his number.

I took a call yesterday from someone claiming that he was from Xfinity and that they had had a problem that required resetting my modem remotely. I told that there was so much noise in his bull pin that I could barely hear him. He tried to explain that there so many of them trying to help customers. When I told him that I had AT&T for my internet, he got mad and hung up on me…

In my area (SoCal), I don’t hear native Spanish speakers answer the phone with " Hola!", it’s always “Bueno”, which is what I say when answering suspect phone calls.

Is “Bueno” a common phone greeting among native Spanish speakers, just a regional greeting, or is it related to the speaker’s country of origin?

Tia Carmen, you surprise me. I’m glad you aren’t as gullible as you appear.

We don’t answer our phone – the answering machine does & has since we were married.

Our telephone number is similar to a variety of businesses over the years including a doctor’s office,a TV repair place, an optician’s store &mostly recently for the past few decades also a Domino’s Pizza location. (Phone number ends 3030 & they like same – I was driving & saw our phone number on a bus bench for same then realized the number was one digit different in the prefix.)

So the machine answers. It is amazing how people have heard the ad for our craft business on the outgoing message & still leave a message such as “This is Mr. Smith, I decided not to get my eyeglasses tinted” “This is Mrs. Johnson. We want a plain cheese pie and will pick it up.” At first we would answer and tell them they had the wrong number – but they were rather rude about it and sometimes would not believe me and keep calling back. At one point we suddenly had a lot more calls about eyeglasses than normal and being nice (or so I thought) I called and asked for the manager and explained and suggested they check any new paperwork they had and were handing out for the wrong number – they were rather nasty. (Husband after the calls had started was at a work meeting and saw “our” phone number on someone’s eyeglass case and then realized the one digit difference. Now, if it was a person or a hospital is calling the doctor’s office and it sounds important we will pick up the phone and let them know they have the wrong number – though this normally ends up in an argument. Getting many more spam calls lately on home line do not know why.

We only give our cell phone numbers to our sisters/BIL’s/niblings, my mom and fellow board members of our reenactment unit/my embroidery chapter. Each of these groupings has its own ringer and there is another ringer for everyone else. We don’t answer unless it rings with one of the special ringers – oh and we have each have a special ringer for the other.
