I feel that Sluggo’s expression in the last panel tags this better than anything I could come up with.

That’s how scientists make their discoveries. By building on earlier work by other great scientists.

It may lack some of the brevity of the original.

The original, as it happens, was one of the great scientific burns – Robert Hooke, to whom it was addressed, certainly aspired to be one one of the giants, and was being told in no uncertain terms that he wasn’t all that, to use the vernacular.

There’s also the amusing but probably apocryphal element of Hooke being of small stature, meaning Newton was also teasing him about being short, in the most elegant way possible.

To any action there is always an opposite and equal reaction. We see this play out as Sluggo makes his statement, then receives an opposite and equal reaction from Nancy. May an apple fall from the tree and hit Nancy in the head, so she can finally discover the gravity of the situation.

Apparently she doesn’t get the metaphor. She should walk a mile in Isaac Newton’s shoes before she sits under that apple tree.

And so the Giant grabbed Nancy by both ends and attempted to stretch her out like a spyglass, accidentally ripping her in half.

I sometimes wonder why I even read the “new” Nancy. She seems to be just a self-absorbed jerk much of the time.

Newton made his own telescope. He also invented various math tools as he needed them.
