A neighbor rigged up an old smoke alarm to go off, then shut down when he would yell out, “I’m just cooking!” He pranked alot of dinner guest with it. Tru story!
Me. While probably hard on the heart, it’s good exercise sprinting across the room to reset the screaming alarm. In my case, sprinting to different rooms to reset ALL the alarms.
Gracie Allen’s Classic Roast Beef Recipe: Ingredients: 1 large Roast of beef, 1 small Roast of beef.InstructionsTake the two roasts and put them in the oven. When the little one burns, the big one is done
Our kitchen smoke detector was going off too often – let alone the one in our RV (think Chevy van, not something huge you see in movies) the one time we used it to cook as had lost electricity in the house – and I found out why. The smoke detector has to be at least 10 feet from the stove (and some I have read 15 feet).
The one in our RV was less than 3 fee as it was on the other side of the RV. Since learned that people cooking in this model RV put a shower cap over the detector when cooking to avoid a problem.
The one in the house was also too close to the stove with no place to move it further (into the bathroom? the dining room?) This one went off often, including one year when cooking for July 4th – frankfurters. I shut off the stove. I opened the back door next to the stove. I then climbed up on a chair with a piece of cardboard and waved the smoke towards the door for about half an hour. Then it was time for dinner. Husband has trouble hearing, was upstairs on the opposite of the house with the air conditioner on (making lots of noise) and the office door closed so he did not hear the alarm going off until he started down to find out why I had not called him for dinner. I ended up knocking a decorative plate (one of a set of 4) off the wall and breaking it while waving the smoke away. Our solution to this is the best/safest in the world. The alarm now sits on top of our fridge hanging over the edge of it. If I am cooking something which might set off the alarm. I take the smoke detector to the living room on the other side of the house first and I move certain magnet on the fridge to the day of the week it is on the weekly magnet calendar on the fridge front to remind me to put the smoke detector back later.

To me, when the smoke alarm goes off at the dinner hour, it’s not time for chow it’s time for takeout or delivery.;-D

Once heard on the TV show McHale’s Navy, “If it’s burning it’s cooking, when it’s black it’s done.”

My stove hood automatically comes on with any smoke. Smoke doesn’t mean it’s ready either.

He looks like what my mom has always referred to as a religious cook – all that comes out of his kitchen is burnt offerings & sacrifices!
