Find a job you enjoy doing and you’ll never work a day in your life. Per Mark Twain. My nephew ran with a less than desirable group. Their life goals were to find a woman on welfare, and if she had a couple of kids, even better! You’ll never have to work a day in your life. Have no idea how that worked out for him.
20 years swing shift. The only thing I really liked about it was going to the late movie on Sunday night. I was the sole occupant of the theater most times. Movie was over I was the only one left in the building!
For me work started at 4:00 AM . This was nice in the Summer but sucked in the winter because most Winter road care in my area was lacking at that time in the morning ;-)
For five years, I worked from six in the evening ‘til six in the morning. Worst shift I ever worked………mainly because I have NEVER slept well in the daytime and by the last night of the ’work week’ I had trouble keeping my eyes open.
I retired in 2002 and have probably worked more since then than I did during my career. About the time I get a house settled, I end up moving. It’s a bad habit.
I think the point here was all the people in the country who work nights. It is an interesting thing. They juggle family time with the difficulties of sleeping in the daytime (if you struggle to sleep at night, imagine trying to do it in the daytime). Isolation…so many night jobs involve only a handful of people in deserted buildings and cities. I worked nights for 4 summers on the railroad during wheat harvest….i liked it, particularly the 78 degree nights vs 98 degree days.
God forbid! It is very hard on the human body to work night shifts. Most places rotate staff through that shift to reduce the physical, emotional and social damage.
Occasionally you find someone who actually enjoys working nights. Occasionally.

Worked the ’Evening Shift" (7-11pm) in a lab while going to college. It was sort of nice having those days off when not in class.

The very unappreciated work force that keeps the wheels of society running while we sleep.

Ha! ‘You only have to work half days’ they told me. ‘You just need to decide which 12 hour shift you want!’ God I love retirement.
