Back in the day many breweries would employ men to test the serving temperature of their beer at local bars. An uncle of mine would carry a thermometer in his shirt pocket and do just that while jotting notes on a little pad, many bartenders would comp his beer thinking he worked for the brewery. He said he always left a tip for those who did. Cheap or smart, not sure.
