In the Great Lakes, we have gulls that are twice the size of a crow. They’ve become used to hanging around outdoor eating spots for “clean-up” duty. I once saw them come in a group of about a dozen and totally devour a meal in less than ten seconds while a woman was concentrating on a bird on her shoulder.
You took a big risk to eat your lunch outside on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. I observed many sea gulls brazenly swoop in and out so fast with the lunches.

I saw this happen on the boardwalk of Atlantic City. A guy was eating a hot dog and the seagull swooped down and stole it from him.

If you want to start a seagull riot, throw a single potato chip onto the sand.
