Electives were in high school. But, I took ceramics, choir & creative writing. Fun classes, easy credits. Then I took Ancient & Medieval History, as one of the History credits needed to graduate. BIG mistake; the textbook was also from the Ancient & Medieval times!!! Extremely small print, old, musty, dusty & mostly a listing of names & dates & places you had to memorize to pass the tests, b/c they were also Ancient & Medieval!
I think we started to get electives in the 11th grade. We could take a bunch of them, too, as long as we took 3 out of 4 of history, science, English and math. My English classes were ALL electives.
Nobody else here had electives in middle school? There were a number of them in my day (home economics, art, woodshop, typing, band, chorus). As for MasterChef, even assuming she’s talking about MasterChef Junior, Season 6 was five years ago.
Back in school, I asked if art classes would ever include sessions on drawing comics. Of course the answer was no. School is only allowed to be misery.
Band and orchestra were mine. And typing (With real typewriters and blank key caps, had to learn touch.) And Home Ec for boys. Learned basics and some other stuff. Shepherd’s Pie is one of my faves. Make it every year with ground turkey for New Year’s.
In junior high, the only choice I recall was a language (French or Spanish) or shop (for boys) or home ec (for girls) in seventh and eighth. Ninth grade, which is technically freshman year, had more options. Actual high school was a whole different experience. I was going to a brand-new school with a lot of experimental education. So only a few traditional year-long courses, generally science or math. Lots of one-quarter electives.
this reminds me of HS wrestling tryouts……there were a ton of kids there the coach came out introduced himself and said, nice to see everyone but first things first if youre here to join the wrestling team thinking it is going to be like Ric Flair Hulk Hogan or the Rock although a lot of the pros were on the wrestling team in college and HS…this isn’t it and you may go ……
about 80 percent of the kids sitting in the bleachers left and once 2 of the team put on a demo match another 10 percent left and there were maybe 5-10 kids left I was a student aide for extra cred the coach said every wrestling coach has given that speech since the 70s but he did have a couple of guys get in the WWE and the old WCW as “enhancement talent”

I chose ceramics as my elective when I was in school. I didn’t know about it at the time but still had fun. Actually made Garfield’s face.

I’m so old that we didn’t have electives. Though we did have electric lights.

One of the electives I took in high school was a semester English class called “Fantasy/Sci-fi”. Man did I ace that class…

Cooking? That was unexpected. Nice to know Heart will join a choir.

Learning about comics can be just as interesting as reading them.
