I often went upstairs to visit my grandmother, and to watch Lawrence Welk with her. She very much appreciated the company. Mr. Welk’s band, it must be admitted, did not have the chops of, say, the Count Basie Orchestra, but they were still good, and the show was quite nicely put together.

My wife’s mom was from Webster, SD. She went to the same high school as Myron Florin. One of my dad’s best friends played drums in a Welk second unit band before WWII.

In his brilliant 2021 novel, Klara and the Sun, Kazuo Ishiguro dubs the ubiquitous device as an “oblong.” Just FYI. “Depression rectangle” is certainly something I can get behind too.

I believe in the UK a “depression rectangle” would be a romantic triangle plus a “gooseberry”. :)
