When I was in High School, there was a smoking section out front. When I was in Middle School, the smokers hung out behind a local deli.
When I was in HS (Class of ’71), the smoking area was the courtyard. Needless to say, many substances besides tobacco were smoked there.
That’s why my HS designated a spot right outside the cafeteria windows for smoking, so the staff could keep their eyes on the smokers.
