Trump is going to win the next presidential election. He leads Biden in the polls, ABC News reported just about 5 minutes ago

If you dig deeply enough, you can find a poll that agrees with you. Polls taken a year before the election don’t really mean all that much. I wonder how many of these polls are still reliant on landline phones (when most people have switched to mobile phones). Also, I am one of those people who believe that most poll respondents say what they think others want to hear, or what they think they should say. In one of her last columns, Erma Bombeck wrote, “I haven’t believed election polls since Dewey defeated Truman!”

Under the USA’s system for electing presidents, the job doesn’t go to the winner of the nation-wide popular vote, it goes to the winner in the Electoral College, in which, for 48 of the 50 states (all except Maine and Nebraska), the candidate with the most popular votes (which, in a multi-candidate race, could well be below 50%) is awarded 100% of the electoral votes.

But, beyond that, if the Electoral College can’t come up with a winner, the race goes to the then-sitting House of Representatives, where they cast votes by state, each state having 1 vote, as agreed upon by that state’s representatives (the ones elected 2 years earlier).

Believe it or not, there was a time when this contraption actually made more sense than some of the other ideas that had been floated.
