If you really want to mystify them, use my idea. A snow globe that has tiny pepper flakes and white dogs. You shake it up and they gradually turn into Dalmatians. :)
On second thought, they might conclude we like our cooked dogs spicy.
Several years ago a local church decided to open a 100 year old time capsule stored in its foundation. The event was held at a nearby firehouse because a large crowd was interested. Newspaper and currency fared the best, while photos and handwritten notes did not. Someone in the group was videotaping the event using a VHS cassette tape recorder. He told me the recording was to be put in the next 100 year time capsule box.
I decided not to disillusion him of the idea that there would still be working equipment to show the tape, or that the metallic oxide on the tape would still be present on the tape and readable. I knew from work that computer tapes that needed to be saved for archiving had to be copied every so many months in order to be sure the magnetic fields on them was still readable. A 100 year old Mylar tape will have disintegrated by then.
I recall a science-fiction story from my youth that started out with citizens streaming out of their houses to gape in awe at this amazing sight in the sky, previously spoken of only in myth and legend, which after several paragraphs of astonishment was revealed to have been a cloud. It soon dissipated.
New study came out, the raises questions about the “human cause” of global warming. Pointing to solar activity. The scientists vested monetarily in the “human cause” are having major meltdowns and are trying to discredit the study.
The snow thing is a common misconception. A warming planet holds more moisture in the atmosphere; with all that heat energy, it ends up coming down in more extreme and catastrophic events.
If there is a future Earth so incredibly hot that even winter polar air never freezes, I don’t think anyone’s going to be worried about digging up time capsules.
