The character of Brom Bones in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” wore a pioneer cap similar to that later worn by Davy Crockett but Brom’s cap was “made from the skin of a fox he had caught and skinned himself”. I like to think that this is symbolic of Brom later outfoxing Ichabod Crane by playing upon Crane’s superstitious fears.
Disney made an animated version of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” which was originally part of a 1949 movie called The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad which also contained an adaption of “The Wind In The Willows”. Both parts of the movie were used as episodes of the TV show Disneyland as were the five Davy Crockett episodes featuring Fess Parker.
I had a raccoon skin cap when I was young, but the best was when I found one as an adult. My wife was not too amused by it, but when I wore it to a football game, my buddies all gave me the “Hooty Hoot” of Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton of the Loyal Order of Racoons in the Honeymooners.
interesting segment on the History Channel claimed Davy actually did not die at the Alamo…he was the last man standing waiting for execution after capture, but reportedly gave Santa Ana a Masonic hand signal and was allowed to walk free…both were known Masons… History Channel had his signature on a land purchase in KY from 1842…

He’s a cool cat! Who is he wearing? Sluggo? Forget it. He’s a paper tiger.

On a sort of related note, contrary to legend & popular belief Daniel Boone never wore a coonskin hat.
