Are the Lewises the same family which have an early version of Shannon (with an equally diabolical younger sibling) whom Luann had the pleasure of babysitting in an earlier strip? Wow, if I were Luann I think I would just lay off the spending until I was old enough to work at Wienie World rather than deal with pseudo-Shannon again.

Well done, Frank. But there are other jobs she could do besides babysitting. When I was around 10 or so my brother and I started doing odd jobs for the neighbors for some spending money. Our parents “hired” us as well to do jobs they needed done over and above our regular chores of course. They both worked so it was nice for them to get a break from some of their responsibilities. We cut the grass, washed the car and did extra stuff around the house. Neighbors also had us wash their cars and shovel snow. It was fun to go to the store and find stuff to buy with money we’d earned ourselves.

When I was a teenager my Dad always found productive labor for me outside the home. I worked on a tobacco farm two summers, helped move an entire science department at a college another summer, worked hamburger joints, mowed lawns and did bits of tutoring. Having a job is a double-barrelled advantage. You are earning money and you have less time to spend it.

When I was 14 I was a farm laborer. I’m now 80 and can’t get any of the neighborhood kids to do any simple jobs that I can no longer do myself. They’re all too busy planning their future as a venture capitalist of a .com billionaire.
