When I was a kid, one of the clothing stores at the large shopping mall was called “Peasant Garb”.

“Why?”

Because, Gunther old buddy, “There’s a SUCKER born every minute.” :-)

Supply and demand.

I know Gunther started to make his own clothes sometime during the strip. Before then I suspect Irma brought him to K-Mart or Walmart for his clothes shopping or perhaps a Zayre or Woolco if they were out in SoCal. Luann probably hit the trendy stores in the mall like The Merry Go Round, The Gap, Banana Republic, etc though Frank would probably only buy her clothes from where the G-Man shopped or perhaps he might have been a Sears/Penney’s/Wards type of gut Knute probably hit the thrift shop like St Vincent DePaul though I could see him hitting the sales rack at the Chess King. Tiff most certainly went to the high end stores in the mall which back in the ‘90s here in FL would be Maas Brothers (which became Burdines and then Macy’s) or perhaps Maison Blanche/Dillards. Nowadays Tiff would probably go to Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. It seems like the high end box stores are the only ones which are truly viable in a mall setting here on the suncoast of FL nowadays as Sears and Wards are gone while Dillards and Penneys are hanging by a thread.

Why not just buy regular jeans and then soak them in bleach and use scissors or a knife to cut holes in them. It’s much cheaper and will give the same end result.

This is a fashion phenomenon I don’t understand. Buying brand new jeans that are torn and tattered and shirts that have holes in them, paying more for those items than you would for ones what are whole. The things we do to be stylish.

And jeans are made of comfortable cotton

Buy regular jeans and put plugs, brakes, and shocks in a car. Extra credit for a clutch or exhaust system, sharpening a mower blade, or setting a garden.

Yeah, but look at all the work it took to make them look horrible!
