An impromptu (deliberately not funny) comedy routine between Billy and a co-worker in the novel Billy Liar:

’Tell me, Mr Crabtree, what are the Poles doing in Russia?’

‘I don’t know, Mr Fisher, what are the Poles doing in Russia?’

‘Holding up the telegraph wires, same as everywhere else.’

Smoked meats – I see the connection in a crude sense.

Bucky got pole axed!

I prefer to think Satchel wasn’t mistaken and the only poll results he’s aware of are about sausage.

Reminds me of the tractor salesman whose girlfriend broke up with him. She sent him a John Deere letter.

I’ve heard that, if you see it made, you won’t eat it.

What aren’t they telling me about sausage?

Over here it’s referred to as KIELBASI or KIELBASA. We have an annual festival that attracts thousands of people…Kielbasafest!

Why does Bucky have unfettered internet access…and, apparently, his own laptop? That’s a national security risk…or at least personal security.
