A few years ago, I went to a lecture about the SF Bay area sewage treatment system and the things they find: phones, false teeth, toothbrushes, wallets, contact lenses, etc. And once they are done processing the water, it goes into a system of purple pipes to be used for landscaping around the Bay.

If you are in a large city, see if they offer tours of the sewage treatment plants. The overall system is pretty interesting.
