Suggest loss of common sense plus increased addiction as symptoms.
Two examples: mother pushing stroller with young tot though our sidewalk free neighborhood. Child making sounds, pointing at flowers in borders, bouncy pups, and generally chatting as little ones do. Mom pushing with one hand while looking at phone held in other, ignoring occasional local traffic, and that wonderful chance to actually ‘be’ with the child.
#2. Young dad sitting at food court table with a maybe 5th grade daughter. She’s talking to him, face serious, leaning forward, arms on table stretched toward him, body language obviously seeing his attention. He is in ‘barrier mode,’ leaning back in chair, head down, eyes on phone screen, and texting to someone, indifferent to her.
In the 70’s, when our boys were at that point, we delighted in their chatter and exuberance whether in a food court, grocery store, anywhere. As they grew older, those times faded, much to our regret. But the memories are there. This lady won’t have those and then wonder where the years went.
