From Foster Grant:Ancient Rome: In the first century AD, the playwright Seneca is credited with using a glass lens to magnify words on a page. The Romans were also the first to use glass to improve their vision of small print.9th century: Abbas Ibn Firnas developed the first corrective lenses, which were shaped and polished into round “reading stones”.13th century: Italian monks are thought to have created the first shaped, ground lens from beryl quartz for reading. These glasses, called reading aids, had a convex lens and an edge made from iron, horn, or wood.13th century glass blowers: In Venice, glass blowers created the first-ever glasses lenses with frames around them. The frames were made of bone, metal, or leather that wrapped around the head and balanced on the nose.
