From Foster Grant:Ancient Rome: In the first century AD, the playwright Seneca is credited with using a glass lens to magnify words on a page. The Romans were also the first to use glass to improve their vision of small print.9th century: Abbas Ibn Firnas developed the first corrective lenses, which were shaped and polished into round “reading stones”.13th century: Italian monks are thought to have created the first shaped, ground lens from beryl quartz for reading. These glasses, called reading aids, had a convex lens and an edge made from iron, horn, or wood.13th century glass blowers: In Venice, glass blowers created the first-ever glasses lenses with frames around them. The frames were made of bone, metal, or leather that wrapped around the head and balanced on the nose.
sorry but doctors in India were the first to use corrective lenses and bi-focals long before Rome and Franklin did and they also had skills in removing cataracts
In Luverne, Minnesota, a town of 5,000, they have at the Rock County Historical Society museum 5,300 nutcrackers. The town is preparing to an erect a 65 foot nutcracker to lure drivers off the freeway to visit the town.
