If you ask, stores here will let you take any empty boxes they have that haven’t been thrown out yet. I’ve even seen that stores will sometimes stack empty boxes in a corner of the store, where people can take them before they’re thrown out.
The company where I work moved in December and waited until the last minute to send volunteers to local stores hunting for free boxes instead of buying moving boxes. Smh
I asked a store for a spare box to bring green chiles to a relative in CA (I’m from NM). Being New Mexican, they immediately understood the situation and unpacked a box of merchandise just so I’d have the right size box to bring on the plane. When bringing green chiles to an ex-pat, nothing is too much to ask! :)
My day. The DMV office is closed. Signs posted on front doors plainly stating office is closed with bilingual translation and directions to another nearby larger office. They approach and grab both door handles furiously pulling against the lock. They now peer in pressing their faces to the glass. They begin to pound on the door. I now approach after watching this all on camera and open the door. They ask….Is the office closed? I answer Yes and go to this location. They ask…If it’s closed then why are you here? I answer To explain the sign. (I am actually there as the office is regional command for the agency I work for. The DMV only shares some space.:-)
Upper level management doesn’t like empty cardboard laying around. Clutter, fire hazard, doesn’t look good. We have a box crusher. Any box that can be opened for stocking already has been. “Just in time inventory”. The reason why if there is a glitch in shipping, there are empty shelves. But it don’t hurt to ask.

The wet boxes are free. The still not unpacked boxes are not even close to free.

There are no stupid questions, but I have a lot of stupid answers.

A stupid question deserves an even stupider answer. And maybe a swear word … or two.

Customer: Can I ask you a stupid question? Tabby: Sure, I’m used to it.

I was an instructor from 1979 until I retired in 2022. Yes, there are dumb questions.
