The Memphis petting zoo in the 70s used to have the rheas in the same area as petting zoo. They had chicken wire around them but little hands could reach through it. And a sign that said “We bite!” But you know who can’t read? People with little hands. And parents bring their kids to the petting area which has a food vendor and a playground so they can take a break from constantly supervising the kids in a child-safe space and sit down for a minute. Which is how someone lost a finger and the zoo lost a lawsuit.

Some of the elephants do circus tricks. They like to do stuff for enrichment.

I’m glad they don’t have a circus’ anymore. I felt sorry for those animals locked in cages and taught to perform.
