My dog will often pick up a stick as we walk, then a minute or two later drop it, sometimes in the roadway (we have no sidewalks in my neighborhood). When I pick it up and toss it to the side, he’ll run over to get it, and it starts all over.
I had a dog that did the same thing with balls. Unfortunately three tennis balls were the most she could get in her mouth at a time. Very frustrating to her when we walked in the park near the tennis court. Eventually I stopped walking that way. Unless we needed to replenish our supplies of tennis balls that is. LOL
