I was digging to replace a water line, and found an old piece of pipe buried. I pulled it out, and my buddy looks at it and say’s," Oh, you dirty copper !!".
My absolute favorite Andy strip that included a constable was an old single panel where the constable was kneeling on the sidewalk, his hands pressed firmly down on a straight white line. Andy was swaying and looking red-nosed. The constable said, “All right, I’m ’olding it still—now walk it!”
The English must be a very forgiving* people. Andy has probably scrapped with everyone who has set foot in any of the pubs in town, yet they still lend him money.

Flatfoot is right. Grown men fighting outside like dogs where kids can see? Get inside to scrap like drunken sots from public view.

JACK won’t permit scrapping inside. He will throw them back outside.

Which the barkeep, of course, will appreciate.

Aren’t Sergeants supposed to be in the Station House doing paper stuff?

Obviously, the intensity of “the scrap” is highly exaggerated, to paraphrase Mark Twain’s remark about his death.

They should have another go ’round. Ale or fists, whatever seems appropriate at the moment.

Ale, then fisticuffs.

*Forgiving or forgetful.
