At least, a quote attributed to Gandhi.

Sigmund Freud wrote in 1893 (translation by James Strachey), “the man who first flung a word of abuse at his enemy instead of a spear was the founder of civilization.” Freud attributed the observation to “an English writer,” but no one knows who that was.

Like Gandhi, I’m still waiting.

Civilization began to be civil due to the work of men like Jan Hus and John Wycliffe. It began to end (not counting a lot of momentum) with the Scopes Trial and re-establishment of the primacy of elitist opinions. — I’m sure you don’t believe it, but I thought I’d share the results of my research and maybe inspire some thought and research of your own. See if you can find and watch the films Flame in the Wind, Sheffey, Time Changer, and Alleged. Read the works of Sir Francis Bacon regarding the practical, logical, and philosophical limits and practice of studying nature and contrast the works of Charles Lyell and Charles Darwin.

Its decline started with the beginning of organised religion.
