Are you part American Indian, Fred. Tradition says that’s how they used to listen for coming horses. Don’t know if they really did, but I guess this method works for hostile dogs on your trail.
My grandpa worked on the railroad right after he got out of the army following the Spanish-American War and he told us about listening for trains that way.

Sometimes our British commando raiders used same trick to listen for a train carrying German troops to the front and then blew it up
Also same tricks by Soviet partisans as well in German occupied part of Russia
