May 28 1960 was the date on the first issue of Buster Comic. The title character was originally billed as “Buster – Son of Andy Capp”. This has been mentioned several times on this website. The most recent mentions were about two weeks ago when America celebrated Mother’s Day. Here in the UK, we celebrate Mother’s Day earlier in the year – three weeks before Easter Sunday.
I started reading Buster Comic as a six-year-old in 1973 and finished reading it as a twelve-year-old in 1979 when I started high school. Buster Comic became Buster and Cor!! Comic due to a merger with a comic called Cor!! in 1974. The first issue of Buster and Cor!! Comic was dated June 22 1974 so I hope to remember to mention this again on June 22. When I started reading Buster, the title strip was Buster’s Dream World. Although he wasn’t Son of Andy Capp at that time, Buster had an Andy Capp-like ability to go to sleep in different places and have dreams before waking up in the final panel. When Buster merged with Cor!!, the title and format of the strip changed again and it became Buster’s Diary with Buster himself narrating the story in flashback. I have read that that version of the strip lasted for nearly ten years and finished in 1984. Buster Comic itself would continue until the New Year issue in 2000.
If Andy would pay off his tab – Jack would be happy to vouch for Andy. And Betting shops should be more than happy – Andy’s a great customer and loser.

Chalkie should be a good character reference for Andy although he has been in the dock with Andy sometimes.

I guess Shady and Shifty don’t count as character witnesses either.

If they’re willing to take on Andy as a client, Shady & Shifty are truly living up to their names.

Andy will have to settle for his good looks and his cheerful disposition to win the day. He’s toast! ;-p
