Not totally fur covered, this carnivore sometimes has a desolate hair or two sprouting on my nose. It is usually easily and painlessly plucked out if I can get a good grip [sometimes tweezers are needed] on it.
A man is up in court on a tricky litigation case, and his lawyer has warned him that the judge is very strict and correct. “He won’t stand for any nonsense and he knows all the tricks!”
“Well, would it help if I sent him a brace of grouse and a bottle of whisky?”
“Absolutely not!” says the lawyer. “He’s as straight as a die and completely incorruptible!”
Come the day of the trial, the man wins his case easily, and afterwards says to his lawyer, “I knew that whisky and grouse would do the trick!”
The lawyer is horrified. “Surely you didn’t send them, after everything I said!”
“Oh, I did. But I sent them in the other man’s name.”
Grouse do not make contact with the log. Grouse wings have evolved in a way that amplifies the drumming sound. Specialized feathers and air sacs allow grouse to produce a loud, low-pitched resonant sound. Other birds flap their wings during flight or displays, but the drumming sound is unique to grouse. The adaptations suggest drumming is an important evolutionary behavior.
Phillips is coming out with a rechargeable shaver for Giant River Otters. I wonder if the males grow long nose hairs in their nostrils when they grow old? ;-p
We bought a house on 2 acres with a large, wooded area in the rear. Early on I walked out there to enjoy the stillness when a grouse “exploded” out of the thicket. Scared me half to death. That’s the other reason they “drum” is to frighten away predators.

That canoe tipping sport sounds about as bad as boxing, and yet the latter is still a sport. Unless the water’s only two to three feet deep, why?
And not only that but one time. I’m telling you that one time. Just saying that one time.
May the Lord be with you as He is with me.

How many hands have been lost trying to pet the cute-looking otters?

Fun fact: the ruffed grouse is the official state bird of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Maybe this is why Curly said, “Look at the grouse! Look at the grouse!”

Next time someone is described as “grousing”, I am going to imagine them beating a log to attract a mate

A male ruffed grouse drumming. It sounds a little bit like a small gasoline engine starting up.

isn’t “one pf the only” a contradiction in terms? (or a song by Roy Orbison)
