My father started building Heathkit computers in 1978, so this is spot on. Yes, it was possible to build a computer at home from commercial kits in 1985, when this strip takes place. Early Heathkit computers had enough RAM to run a modern day vacuum cleaner—nice subtle joke there!
I’ve been building my own gaming pcs since the early 90s, my first was DX2-66 based. The benefits of being a service tech for a company that built their own machines from scratch to lease out.
So someone said this strip takes place in the 1980s….How did I never see that?!? And is this video game they’re all hooked on something kids would’ve played at home in the 1980s? Like Pong? I assumed Orc Craft was just a stand-in for Minecraft.

My current phone has two slots for 1Tb cards. I’ll probably fill that up in my lifetime with pictures.
