According to my son who recently visited Italy, you cannot honk your car horn at pedestrians. Since Italian drivers sometimes drive on the sidewalks, they have a secondary. softer sounding horn, to alert pedestrians that they are about to be run down.

Good word!

Use of the horn for other than collision warning is illegal in many areas. It drove me crazy that Marin drivers would “honk hello” to each other when passing my house, which was on a road that dead-ended at a school. The LAST thing we need is for people to get inured to the sound of a horn.

I can’t remember the last time I honked my car horn.
