I don’t understand the point of kids doing school work over the summer if they aren’t in summer school

Did anybody ever actually have summer reading for school? I always heard about it specifically from comics but nobody I knew ever actually had to do it.

There are 10 days left to summer.

I told him: the books that the school mandates to be read over the course of the summer “vacation” helps keep the brain engaged, so that “your brain won’t ‘ferment’”……..and I added: “You know what it means for your brain to ferment over the summer, right?” And he (with a mischievous ’lil grin on his face) retorts: “Yeah! Ya get stupid again!”………..

……for a minnit there, I THOUGHT that Mr. Peirce decided to just let the “summer reading thingie” slip right past us this year! Ah, HERE it is!……..ha ha…ha Ha HA!!……

My idea on summer reading is the same as my idea on homework; namely: school is supposed to prepare student for the “real world” (a job, maybe a family and children, etc.) right? Well, how many people are expected to deal with work-related activities when they aren’t actually at work? If “school=real world”, then there shouldn’t be any homework or summer reading right?

Just do the work, it isn’t too hard.

Plenty of time. Summer isn’t over until September 22.

Never had a summer reading list ever, but that was when kids were allowed to be kids and explore.

My daughter loved to read. Until her middle school reading program sucked all the joy out of it. Wasn’t until she was in college that she got back into it.
