I used to have the same problem with my headlamp when I went out to feed the horses in the winter. Mostly flies and gnats and a few moths. Then I switched on the red light and now no bugs. Can see more stars too.

The Navy used to rig for red for night vision, except the red lights stood out at night, Now they rig for blue.
