My grandfather was an artilleryman in World War II, he came home with partial hearing loss. He would later say that being a little bit deaf probably saved his marriage.
Drew a pair of eights at most recent birthday [was gonna say last birthday but that’s a little too touchy just now] and am in line with tortoise. Have hearing aids but they are not handy most of the time, so spouse gets a lot of ’What’d you say?" or “What, Dear?” From the tone of mumbles from her direction, I am guessing they are not complimentary.

I wear hearing aids so I can understand my wife’s voice. -40 db about 4kHz and you lose the plosives: p, t, k; b, d, g.
