When I taught at the elementary school level, the first week of school a letter would go out to the parents. We asked them to contribute supplies such as crayons, markers, scotch tape, Kleenex, pencils, etc. Many parents were generous with their giving.
With these school voucher programs, public schools will be struggling more than ever. It’s wrong for tax payer money to be used by parents to send their children to private schools, many of which are faith based. The decimation of public education is a goal of the right wing.
They sold us on The Lottery when gambling was only legal in Las Vegas telling us that the Lottery profits would fund our schools… Now we have privatized segregation and there’s no money for public schools… Yet, billions dollar budgets for Lottery commercials and a ruling by the courts saying we have no right to know who won the big money… But no money for education… Why can’t Johnny read..?
All the money goes to other countries that hate us. We don’t concern ourselves with the citizens of the US. We take care of others before ourselves. I know some will say that is different money….it’s not. Money is money, it can be moved where needed. We need to take care of ourselves and the people of this Country before any funds leave our shores. What a quaint idea!
Our ballot has a $10 billion bond bill for schools ($18 bil with interest). I voted against it, since I voted for similar measures in almost every prior election, and they passed, and now our state is has a deficit to pay down.
Teaching in secondary school is even worse. A student may take six or seven classes, but 25 students among them may have 12 or 15 different class requirements. These vary from minutia such as size and color of binders, to major purchases such as graphing calculators. And that’s just for one semester.
Multiply that by two students per family, plus bus fare to get to the public library, and the per-family tab really adds up. I particularly feel bad for grandparents rearing grandchildren, which is usually an unforeseen situation falling on someone with a fixed income.

How many assistant superintendents does the district have? Another place to look is all the unfunded mandates that are sent out of Washington.

The states that feel tax money should go to private schools make situations like this much worse.

State governments fail to allocate strong budgets for school districts, then blame the schools for low test scores.

My temple had a drive for new underwear and socks. This was to help with the new clothes others were donating. The under garments were forgotten.

It’s hard across the country. My daughter teaches in Georgia and her school was hit by the hurricanes. Not something they planned on.

Fire half the administrators and you’d have plenty of extra for classroom supplies.
