I think this captures the real way every student has understood the pledge they were forced to bleat out in unison. Iāve long thought it should be āI pledge to uphold the Constitution for which this flag standsā¦..ā; and leave out the āunder Godā partā¦.
I pledge allegiance to flag, (that so many of brothers in arms fought and died for and one day, when I am no longer here, my wife will be given) of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
