I think this captures the real way every student has understood the pledge they were forced to bleat out in unison. I’ve long thought it should be “I pledge to uphold the Constitution for which this flag stands…..”; and leave out the “under God” part….
I pledge allegiance to flag, (that so many of brothers in arms fought and died for and one day, when I am no longer here, my wife will be given) of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
