A: Vitamin D acts more like a hormone than a vitamin. Unlike other vitamins, our bodies have the unique ability to make vitamin D from the sun. Studies suggest a link between vitamin D and a healthy immune system.
My kid, a milk white carrot top with light gray eyes, use to get sunburned on the playground in January. I had to send them in with a bottle of sunblock and a doctor’s note.
You can technically get sunburnt any time of the year, you just need to receive enough exposure to sunlight. I think the real reason we generally don’t in the colder months is because that’s usually when we’re the most bundled up and don’t have enough exposed to burn.
There was a guy in my dorm at the UW known as “Sun God” because he was always tanning himself whenever there was any amount of sunshine. He was also what they used to call a “professional student” since he was at least in his late 20s and more likely in his early 30s. I came back from Christmas Vacation one year and it was 9 degrees outside with crystal blue skies. There he was laying on a recliner on the patio in his shorts, shirt off, working on his tan. It didn’t seem like he could get any darker but he was always willing to give it a go.

The air may be cold, and the sun shining through more atmosphere, but it’ll still do the job if you give it the time.
