This truly used to be me! I used to be the Pied Piper in the neighborhood….. Next door neighbor had 2 young kids, and the house next to them had two kids the same age. They used to knock on my door asking if I could come out and play. Football was their preferred game….though it always dissolved into a game of Calvin ball as there were times you had to run the bases after you kicked the ball, whether it was counter-clockwise or not did not matter as long as someone got tackled during the play. Hiking the ball was an important part of the game as was kicking the ball while on the ground keeping it away from the opposing team. This was a strategy developed by those who played soccer. More than one goal was score by kicking the ball across the goal line! Fun times….
I suppose they couldn’t do this, because it would be copying off an old “For Better or For Worse”, but I can just see the neighborhood kids coming up and ringing the doorbell: “Can Mr. Gumbo come out and play?”
I was a few years older and bigger than the younger kids in the neighborhood, but we still played together sometimes. We were playing a tackle-tag game once when the little kids thought it would be fun to take me down by tripping me. I was 13 or 14, I think.
We were much too close to the edge of the yard when they tripped me at full run, and I went flying face-first into the door of our parked car. Owwch!
They ran and got my mom, of course. I put a small dent in the car door and had to go get my glasses fixed. I also went to the dentist to see if anything was damaged mouthwise, but it wasn’t. I had to eat soup and soft food for a day or two, but I still say I got off very easy on that one.

If my back could take it, I’d go for that.
