A great analogy for the “Join or Die” snake cartoon. It is a political cartoon that symbolizes the importance of colonial unity in the American Revolution.
We are supposed to be the United States and the powers that have just been elected are slicing us apart. We should unite to live or our democracy will die.
Except that we were not united when we fought for our Independence. conservatives, then called ‘Tory’ opposed our independence and some fought for the Brits. Adams and Jefferson wanted slaves to be freed and equal, as our Declaration said, but 6 colonies refused. With all 13 it was doubtful we’d win. With 7 impossible. The slaves lost. After we won our Independence conservative Tories were shunned, beaten, tarred and feathered, run out of town on a rail, and/or hanged. Most left for Nova Scotia, some for England.
… and there’s bistec (sic), chuleta, nana, cabeza, sesos, moronga, criadillas, machitos, and a long etc. Ben Franklin didn’t know half of it when he crafted his famous cartoon.

It does make you wonder how the analogous “snake taco” became suddenly, electorally popular.
