To encourage environmental savings one company gave free passes for the train. The train had a “bike” car. From the station to work was a paved path. Great fun until you have to work late and miss the train.
Ah, the 1970s – I recall the OPEC embargo. The price of fuel skyrocketed and the lines were insane … a lot of stations couldn’t fill their tanks and had no gas to sell at any price.
People complained even back then. Gas may have been a lot cheaper, but cars weren’t nearly so fuel efficient as they are today. Some of the larger American models only got around ten miles to the gallon or less, especially if they had a V8 engine. I can remember Dad complaining bitterly about the mileage. He started switching to smaller cars in the 1970s when gas prices shot up due to the various oil embargoes

In the old days when gas was cheaper, a lot of things were different.

Do bike riders in Britain ever ride with helmets, or is that strictly an American thing?

I’m positive the original version had Fred say “petrol” or “fuel” instead of “gas”.

The cost of gas, maintenance and insurance makes me glad I don’t drive any more.
