One time the weather service fired up a new weather prediction program on their computer. Results were way off. After much examination of their program they found out they had accidently left out the Rocky Mountains in their program.
The National Weather Service does a terrific job particularly when you realize that weather is chaotic by nature. In fact it was meteorologists who spurred the development of a new branch of math called Chaos Theory. When you watch a line of showers coming it’s not a nice, even line but a collection of turbulent cells that come and go. Over a large area they hit the nail on the head but particular neighborhoods can escape the cells while others nearby take a hit. Hooray for the NWS!
some years ago I picked up an old book at a garage sale, and in it was an old postcard used as a bookmarker… it was a weather report for a week back in the 1930’s that the Weather Bureau would send out to farmers and ranchers!
I wish my boy was still alive so we could go on walkies in the snow. He LOVED freshly fallen snow, the deeper the better! Bounced around in it so joyfully.
Will miss him forever. (He passed 3 years ago tomorrow 12/12/2021).
I recall, from an SNL skit about newscasters, a flummoxed weatherman shouting, “You try being the only member of the news team who has to predict the future!”
When I lived in Michigan we usually had a better chance of getting it right if we planned for the OPPOSITE of whatever the meteorologists said. Especially in August.
I’m actually impressed with their ability to forecast the weather, even to the hours. I never cease to be amazed, when my phone says it’s going to snow at 3 pm and they nail it, more often than not.

Get some jars of bear fat. 100% better than computers. G. Gordon Wimsatt beat the computers with his bear grease. Cost about $5 compared to millions.

Another thing to blame on climate change: it screws up weather prediction based on a hundred years of existing weather patterns.

They’d be a lot more accurate if the just looked out the window.
