Two things that aren’t served in Italy – ketchup and pan pizza. If you want lots of cheese with some bread you go to Switzerland and go all-in with a cheese fondue :)
Wasn’t sticking pineapple rings on the glazed ham suggested through advertising way back when the had “ham what am slogans”? Did dole brainwash us to the conclusion of pineapple on pizza?
Back in the early 60’s we lived in Hawaii, my dad worked for Standard Oil and my parents had a party. They invited a a couple of officers from a tanker in port to the party, the tanker had an Italian crew and they brought honest Italian pizza! It was a sheet pan of thick bread topped with a hint of tomato sauce and anchovies on top. I was 9 years old and that was not what I expected for “real Italian pizza”.I’m guessing those guys weren’t from the part of Italy where pizza dough was thin…
There is a pizza joint here that is owned by an immigrant from Italy. They do NOT have pepperoni. In an article in the paper years ago she said that pepperoni wasn’t used in her region. I wish I could recall specifically where she was from. They do not deliver, so I have never tried them. They stay on the top restaurants list though, so they must be doing something right.
When we were stationed in Germany there was the equivalent of a food truck that used to operate outside of the Merrill Barracks kaserne in Nürnberg. It had great pizza. I was taken aback by one of the most popular items. They would cook the pizza and then crack an egg on it and that was how one ate it. {Ugh}. I cannot handle scrambled eggs that have some white in them. (Obviously I do not eat egg McMuffins.) There is no way I am eating a raw egg on anything.
The Pizzeria capital of Canada is Windsor Ontario, just south of Detroit. The first one was in 1947, and there are now several hundred pizza parlours there. Windsor style pizza features medium size crust, shredded pepperoni, only canned mushrooms and local Galati cheese. Just across the river in Detroit the locals favour deep rectangular pan pizza. Apparently the Hawaiian pineapple /ham pizza was invented in Canada by a Greek restaurant owner in Ontario in 1962.

It seemed like a good argument was about to be made, but then they went with Hawaiian and the argument completely folded… smh.

That sounds more like bruschetta than pizza.
