It might come down to what is the important information (skill set) that you want to keep in mind and what you don’t mind exporting to an external device? Like books that started holding the lore of the tribe.
He’s probably right. Studies have shown the more tech knows stuff, the less people remember it. Like, how many phone numbers did you know in pre-cell phone days? How about now?
I’ve never had good navigational skills. I know how to read & use a map, but my GPS tells me which lane to be in for the upcoming turn that I need to make. Plus, GPS is more up-to-date than paper maps. I drove from DE to MA 2 summers ago, and would not have made it without my GPS. Sure, there are signs, but sometimes it is not possible to get to the correct lane easily. Many years ago (pre-GPS) my dad & I drove to San Antonio, with me being the map reader. We did well, until we go to Dallas/Fort Worth, which is where I told him he was on his own as his maps were so old that the interstate was not on the map.

Just like being overly dependent on GPS makes people less able to know where they are.
