Freewriting is a technique in which the author writes their thoughts quickly and continuously, without worrying about form, style, or even grammar. Alongside brainstorming, freewriting is typically used early in the writing process to collect and manifest one’s thoughts. The resulting writing is usually not intended for the final draft.
My version of freewriting usually occurs when my characters are just standing around, waiting for me to write. I start writing outside my style and way outside the established story. They get ticked off at what I’m having them do, so they stark talking to me, I delete what I wrote, and we all continue the story. I have over 20 published works, so it works for me.
Like this? It is as ignorant of spelling etc. as I could make it: grrvubio. ihuib. rw g klnv. rrr. rwq hjjuyre hj awqbmvdg kooop wecvbasas zxfghjk weuooiiiertyuio!
I know a lot of people who express themselves without regard to spelling, grammar or sentence structure. Or facts and reality. And let’s not forget the misused words. (Reminds me of a couple of managers/supervisors I’ve worked with.)
I’d never heard the term “free writing,” perhaps because I don’t write fiction. Most of the writing I do is for work (such as emails), or making my daily diary entry, or posting comments here. But I often describe my writing style as “banging out my thoughts on the keyboard.” This is especially true when I’m having trouble getting my thoughts organized — I guess that could be considered to be writer’s block. Then I do a lot of editing and revising before I’m satisfied with the final product and hit “Send” or “Comment” or “Save.”

That’s how Jack Kerouac wrote “On the Road.” But he needed a lot more blocks.

“Free writing” is when you don’t get paid for it.
