    the squirrels screamed for the mammoths to stop and let them cross – but since they hadn’t evolved ears yet – they couldn’t hear them

    Mastodons (or are those mammoths) were slow enough that the squirrel could reverse direction a couple of times and still get away. That was an exceptionally dumb squirrel.
