When I was a kid, our cats’ favorite scratching post was a section of log that my Mom had salvaged from a tree that was being cut down. They loved that thing.
Unfortunately, they also liked scratching select items of furniture.
We don’t go near the carboard ones because they always smell like mold. Plus, messy. I do let the cats have boxes to scratch and sleep in, if they smell okay (nothing from amazon, because strong mold and toxic chemical smell on everything). Some cats prefer horizonal (especially if they have arthritis), but most prefer vertical, so they can stretch. One of my cats uses both. Scratching poles have to be strong enough for the cat to stretch all the way up, and sturdy enough to not wobble or tip. Never use carpet as the scratching part, unless you want to teach your cat to scratch on your carpet. The best scratching medium is sisal. Not the rope variety, though, which is cheaper but has sharp shards that feel like glass to the poor cat. Check out Purrfect Posts for the BEST scratching post ever! My littlest kitty (8 pounds) prefers the big Mondo, while the medium one likes the regular posts, because she likes to sit on the top of them. For hours. The biggest cat prefers the smallest posts we have, the ones on their “modern” cat trees, which are less tree and more furniture. Go figure!

If our cat tried to do that, she’d have been whacked. She’d never do it again.

That’s a 42 year old cat for you.

Try one of those cardboard ones. I got one for my mom’s cat. Plopped on the floor and within seconds was clawing at it.

Good to see Ralph in his sweatpants again. Well, maybe not good, but you know what I mean. He’s one of my comfort heroes.

Don’t ignore a meowing kitty. If you do, you get tiny meat hooks in your butt, or someplace even more tender.

I get that, my cats don’t like my pants but they sure love my sitting chair!
