It causes vibrations in the atmosphere. For there to be sound, there needs to be a microphone, eardrum or other device that can turn vibration into sound.

I think that this comic illustrates it perfectly. The idea goes beyond trees in the forest.

It just makes sound waves. Actual sound is the interpretation of sound waves by an ear/brain, human or otherwise.
