I hate when my family gives me indigestion, not to mention apoplexy.

The kid reaching across the table is way out of proportion compared to the other family members.

Tillie? Glee you? Jaw and jaw? Snapping mottoes party? I’m lost. Maybe my brain has apoplexy.

BTW, I spell “mottoes” without the “e”: mottos.

How is the sister supposed to eat her cauliflower and mashed potatoes without a face? (Not a very colorful meal, a lot of white food).

Just give me the da@n food and stop explaining it. I am hungry dar@ it and I want my friggin’ food.

Pass the salt shaker, please. My apoplexy isn’t salty enough.

Goofus always reaches for food, upsetting everyone. Gallant politely asks for it to be passed to him.

I have a set of antique salt and pepper shakers just like those. Creepy. Maybe I better check them for tiny beetles.

Sit at the table and use a fork or spoon! Your great grandparent would consider you such barbarians if they were alive today.

I think they mean table, “board,” as in “bread and board” was probably the older term for it, from when you were lucky if you had a board to put the food on.

I don’t think that Faceless Girl is the sister. She’s actually the father’s mistress, which is why her face is whited out for confidentiality. She’s going to bloodily avenge Aunt Susie’s apoplexy. (We see the late Aunt Susie’s plate at the far right, in memoriam.)

In the old days -up until about the 1500s- tables were boards set on frames (trestles) so that they could be stored easily (i.e. out of the way) when not in use.

Yep, Lileks has some wonderful stuff over there. I like this kind of ‘toon … the more you look at it, the more there is to deconstruct. Just imagine what people will be doing 67 years hence with our current ‘cultural product’.

According to Wiki, Warren G. Harding and Robert Louis Stevenson (among others) died of apoplexy.

They are doing it all wrong. If someone is dumb enough to leave the table for that length of time, we are gonna F@ck with your food or chair or something.
