When it comes to HIPAA some people are overly cautious. When my wife went on Medicare I called one of her doctors to update her insurance information. I was told that because of HIPAA they couldn’t talk to me unless my wife gave the OK. After taking a deep breath I tried to calmly explain to them that I wasn’t calling to ask for information which is forbidden under HIPAA but to give them information.
This seems to be a reference to the Hippocratic Oath but it is erroneous in that there is no mention of patient confidentiality therein. It actually consists of four fundamental principles of medical ethics: beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, and justice which is informally summed up as “First, do no harm”.

Reminiscent of this (pre-HIPAA) Golden Oldie:
Caller: “Hello, I’m calling about Mrs. Rivers, in room 312. What you can tell me about her condition?”
Nurse: “Oh, she’s doing just fine. In fact, she’s scheduled to be released tomorrow.”
Caller: “Really? Oh, that’s great news! I’m so relieved! Thank you so much!”
Nurse: “You’re welcome, Ma’am. Are you a close friend or relative?”
Caller: “No, this is Mrs. Rivers in room 312. No one’s been telling me a d@mned thing!”
