I murdered innocent men, women and machine gunned nursing babies to keep America safe and its corporate/military/prison/police state wealthy and powerful.

Okay, so now everyone has had a chance to insult everyone else.

We’ve been in Afghanistan how long now? This is, in a way, old news. The soldiers are out there too long with too little rest - this we know. So the question is, what do we do about it? Do we pull out and leave the Afghani’s to their own devices? Do we institute a draft so we can get a convincing number of soldiers on the ground?

Or do we continue the same muddle (to what end, I don’t know)? I suspect we lost any sense of purpose there several years ago, and now it seems like the only purpose we have is to not get pushed out by the Taliban.

Thanks for honoring our men and women in uniform. We need to be continually reminded that lives are being given. Thanks to my sailor, Matt, and all our troops worldwide.

God Bless our troops! They do what they are asked to do by the commander in chief to support their country). Many argue we shouldn’t be in this wars and there are valid points to those arguments. Many politicians argue we shouldn’t be in war even though they vote to put us there. Whether we should be or not does not excuse the degradation of our great soldiers who are put into horrific situations.

Stuff it Andy. My kid was there and one of the best kids I ever knew was blown up there on her third tour, thanks to Bush and Cheney. Grow up, or a pair.

@ Vanpelt - I’m with you, but only part way. This isnt a war. And the NGO’s are the ones who will win it, if it is winable. But they need the military there in order to do their jobs. It’ll have to be a partnership between the two.

@ Churchillwasright - I think you missed the point of dtroutma’s comment. We have plenty of good people of there, doing good work. Any comment on baby killing or other ridiculousness is inappropriate and insulting to our families who are in the military. Her comment was right on. And I don’t blame her for aiming at ANandy. Harvin Gwin’s comment is just to repulsive to even consider mentioning.

The power to declare war is too important to entrust to Congress or the President. We should amend the Constitution and give the power to declare war to the people. Set it up so that we have to have a referendum and vote on the war. Take the power of sending our young men and women off to die in a war away from rich, old men and women who just want to get richer. Leave Congress the power to use troops in a short term, emergancy situation but other than that then should have to ask WE THE PEOPLE.

Oldlegodad, you seem to have difficulty with the truth, which is hardly surprising as you allow yourself to comment on the marital status of HARVIN GWIN’s parents without adducing the slightest evidence. Alas, Mr GWIN correctly states precisely what US, UK, French, German, etc, etc, not to forget our own Swedish soldiers, are in Afghanistan to do. If you dislike the fact - rather than its description - work to bring your troops back to your shores, where they belong !…

Should we send all the police home because sometimes they have to kill people in the line of duty? It’s their job. They put themselves at risk to protect us. Do you agree that Afghanistan needs protecting? Do you agree that there are people in Afghanistan who are out to do us harm? I’m just going to assume that the answer to both questions is, unfortunetly, yes. So why don’t we all work together, give our US, Uk, French, German and Swedish soldiers the tools that they need to do their jobs and get out of their way.

It is unfortunate that they must be there. Let’s not make their jobs more difficult. And if you can’t help, at least shut up.

Dypak, good comments and welcome. One thing: I’m not sure that Afghanistan needs protecting - not by us anyway. And I’m not sure the people who are out to do us harm are there - not anymore anyway. Somehow, it seems we spend a lot of time, money and lives for very little benefit to anyone (other than the military industrial complex of course).

I’ve annoyed congress to at least bring a draft up for a vote, if for no other reason to scare those of draft age, but since since it’s so politically unpopular, they are afraid it would affect their chances for reelection, which by the way is their primary duty. While pork is made to look like it’s for the voters, it’s really just to remind you to vote for them.

To be honest, I believe we sent troops to Afghanistan because the Cheney regime still needed to justify attacking Iraq and they needed to be staged nearby for a rapid deployment. Not long after they got there, the vast majority were sent to Iraq and Afghanistan became the forgotten war. Our own troops called it that.

Six months after Bush made his famous dead or alive speech about Osama bin Laden, someone asked him about bin Laden and he said he didn’t cane anything about him. Rather than print what Bush said to Ariel Sharon, I’ll give a link, as the auto sensor will bleep the entry. Scroll down to “In hindsight:”
