I was in public school and loved it. My sixth grade teacher was a race car driver (the local raceway of course), and she’d bring her car to school sometimes. You never saw a bunch of boys swarm so fast.
She looks just like my first grade teacher, ruler in hand and all. If you were daydreaming, like Calvin, you got that ruler whack right on the palm of your hand…ooh, I cringe to think of it…
Good morning to ALL!
Einstein had it right when he said imagination is more important than knowledge. And at the rate Calvin is going, he’ll become a great physicist or philosopher before the end of his life.
We had a teacher named Mr. Woodburn for metal shop. Would’ve been perfect if he were teaching wood shop! He was a mid-western gentle giant who spoke with a drawl. Hope he’s out there enjoying life!
And thanks, C&H (BW), for sending me back to junior high for a moment. Goes nicely with a Sunday morning. Good Morning everyone!
I fell sound asleep in one TV repair class I took one summer. When the yard stick slammed down on the desk, I thought a tire had exploded on my car. It was a few seconds before I woke up to what was REALLY going on!
Yeah, yeah; whatever. Some people do march to the beat of a different drummer – but Calvin does the Merengue!
Calvin isn’t a “gifted” child who’s not being challenged enough; he’s a lazy, self-centered child who thinks that the universe should be entertaining him 24/7, without a thought as to what he should be doing for the universe in return.
Sorry, Calvin, but that’s not the way life works. There’s a time and a place for everything, and daydreaming when you’re supposed to be learning math (or history, or geography, or whatever) is neither the time nor the place.
It’s called taking responsibility for your own actions, Calvin, and not trying to half-arse your way through something simply because it’s not what you feel like doing at the moment.
One of life’s cruelest lessons is that all actions produce inescapable consequences, and it always seems to be the one lesson that fools never learn, no matter how many times the course material is presented to them. If Calvin wants to avoid unpleasant consequences, then he needs to start making smarter choices that will lead to better consequences.
Tomorrow’s story arc, if it’s the one I think it is, will demonstrate this fact rather vividly.
My daughter is an exact replica of Calvin and she’s ADHD. Sorry Johanan. But honestly wasn’t it better in some way in the past without the labels? No personality studies of introverted and extroverted types, Aspergers or ADHD. Wouldn’t it be nice for once to embrace in differences and quirkiness instead of labeling and psychoanalyzing?
Not to worry, legaleagle….someday somebody will successfully stiffle Calvin’s vivid imagination into something more seriously responsible, respectable and numb—like maybe a preacher, or a lawyer or something.
Poor kid.
”Imagination is more important than knowledge.”
~A. Einstein
Do you realize that Calvin is 6 years old Legaleagle48? Most six year olds want to play not sit at a desk all day long filling in worksheets. Leave your speech for the high schoolers.
School was and is uninspiring. I fell asleep many a time in school. We don’t need song and dance but surely more enthused teachers who care about their subjects would help. A lot more hands on experiences to ignite learning would help too. Handing out worksheet upon worksheet is the work of a boring and lazy teacher.
I remember a tale about a college student that fell asleep in back of a history class. The prof noticed it, but just continued with the lecture. When the class was over, the prof wrote on the blackboard “Leave quietly”. The sleeping student woke up in the middle of the next class which was calculus I think. Boy was he surprised.
Susan001:
When my son was in school they had no gifted children’s programs until high school. The only programs they had in elementary school was for slow learners. I had a son who was much like Calvin. They labeled him as troubled, immature, and socially challenged. They decided to test him and found he was advanced for his age and basically bored with the curriculum. They said the teacher had many students to help but they couldn’t give one on one help to any one student and they wouldn’t advance to the next lesson until everyone got it and definitely couldn’t put him in a grade higher’s book. I ended up putting him in a private school where he was able to skip 2 grade levels. We decided to send him back to public school in Junior High where they promised more challenging work. They weren’t advanced classes but he could pick some mini-courses to add to his schedule. There were several clubs he could join afterschool which would challenge him and he joined the student council and the school paper where he could get his voice heard. The school board eventually heard his voice and many other gifted children and their parents. Things started to change and by the time he got to high school, there were real advanced courses and school credit for those volunteering their time to help with area businesses like my son had been doing for many years.
Calvin is a very very bright, active 6 year old boy. He also lives in a world of adults that don’t have a clue (mom, dad, Roz, Miss Wormwood). Susie has conformed and joined that world, Calvin never does. That’s why some of us love him and others feel he needs to be disciplined more. He is not a kid that anyone is ever going to control and for that I cannot help but admire him to the max! Fly away Cal and leave them all in the dust!!!
Calvin is not 100 percent perfect. He’s far from it but that’s not the point. The point is we love his antics and the strip gives a smile to our faces.
I think that my son is a “reincarnation” of Calvin. Very bright and creative, but nobody is going to ‘control’ him. I wonder if Calvin (were he real) would have been labeled “autism spectrum” too?
I guess it depends on what your definition of “perfect” is.
A perfect angel? There’s plenty of time for Calvin to flit about the clouds playing a harp after his lifetime ends.
A perfect 6-year-old? I’m with Mrs.Luke on this one.

He’s a 6 year old BOY!
If this strip were NOT perfect just the way it was, we wouldn’t be reading it again now.
Susie is an unimaginative little troll like his parents are. They are all antagonists to Calvin, and none of them match him on any level.
Hobbes is still an antagonist, even though he’s Calvin’s imagination, but at least he’s up to Calvin standards in that respect.
Cheers, GeneAR!
