Give him credit? For what? He has to learn discipline somehow or that brilliant ENFP-in-training mind of his will never amount to anything.
I’m not rooting for Calvin at all here, and he and I are two peas of a pod. But because we are two peas of a pod, I can have compassion on his weakness.
Granted, he gave 110% today, but average that out over the 30 days that he was totally oblivious to the project, and you get … F-.
Creative license lets Calvin have a vocabulary and a philosophical turn of mind way beyond his years, and at times we’ve seen his schoolwork include basic algebra. So expecting all the bugs to be scientifically labeled isn”t really a stretch.
Maybe if he claims the piece of lint is an unknown species, and names it after his teacher, he’ll get that A.
I have seen the term ENFP several times regarding Calvin since I started reading the strip, but can’t figure out what it stands for. Someone enlighten me, please.
ENFP is one of the Meyers-Briggs personality types. Wikipedia as usual can hook you up:

Myers-Briggs description
ENFPs are initiators of change, keenly perceptive of possibilities. They energize and stimulate others through their contagious enthusiasm. They prefer the start-up phase of a project or relationship, and are tireless in the pursuit of new-found interests. ENFPs are able to anticipate the needs of others and to offer them needed help and appreciation. They bring zest, joy, liveliness, and fun to all aspects of their lives. They are at their best in situations that are fluid and changing, and that allow them to express their creativity and use their charisma. They tend to idealize people, and can be disappointed when reality fails to fulfill their expectations. They are easily frustrated if a project requires a great deal of follow-up or attention to detail.
Keirsey descriptions of ENFP
Champions delight in novelty. They are optimistic, enthusiastic, and vivacious, craving expressions of strong emotion. With a dramatic flair, they share their experiences with others, hoping to reveal some universal truth or win others over in support of a cause. Attuned to possibilities, Champions scan their environment, probing the emotions, needs, and motivations of others. This sensitivity sometimes conflicts with their intense drive for personal authenticity. Spontaneous and personable, they attract others to their company.
I have one of those Meyers-Briggs books myself, and it is very interesting. Took the test myself years ago as part of a course on Negotiating and another in Avoiding Conflict. Very interesting! If Calvin is anything like me, he will turn out just fine …. Muwahahaha !
Calvin you remind of my son at times at that age and older put homework off. Saw him doing to before class one time. I think he thought it would go away.
In my senior year in High School my civics teacher would assign the questions at the end of the chapter. For the first few chapters I would diligently answer each question with a short succinct paragraph. He gave me either a D or an F.
I incrementally changed how I answered from then on, giving longer but less helpful answers. In the end I got A’s for long answers filled with gibberish, letter strings that were not even words!
I showed the results to my Mom who was the school librarian. She thought it was both disturbing and funny.
The probable grade is on a numeric scale of 0 to 100. For a single, 30-day project, it probably represents a third to a half of his science grade for the semester. Since Miss Wormwood will see right through his “effort,” he probably won’t even get 5 points.
MontanaLady: Loved “The Music Man” reference! It’s my 3rd-favorite musical (behind “The Sound of Music” and “Oklahoma!”).
poohbear8192: It’s a shame that short correct answers got D’s and F’s while long paragraphs filled with nothing but gibberish that weren’t even words got A’s! Obviously, the teacher wasn’t even bothering to read the students’ answers or that wouldn’t (or at least shouldn’t) have happened! Makes you wonder why they even bothered to assign the work for students to do at all. It’s something like that that can turn good students into slackers – at least for that class anyhow. Your mother was right … definitely disturbing indeed!
Calvin, ENFP or not (whatever ENFP stands for), keep in mind that God loves you with all His heart, and will do so for forever. I think I might be a bit of this designation too, so you get a hug from me in spite of what your self-righteous ladyfriend has to say about either of us….
Well, this teacher was top notch wrestling coach. His star wrestler was a friend of mine. I guess that’s what the school board cared about. Other coach/teachers I’ve had were just fine.
Anyway…….
Remember
How can there be any sin in sincere? Where is the good in goodbye? Tell me!
One of my college profs told us that she threw the papers down the steps, the heavy ones landed at the bottom & got A’s, the lightweights landed at the top and got lower grades. Luckily, she was kidding but I did have to chuckle at the mess it would make if those papers all contained bugs.

some teachers grade on a scale - they weigh your report, and the heavier it is, the better the grade…
the fact that the whole middle of the thing is just a bunch of random words doesn’t get in their way…
